Going for a waxing is the sixth most popular salon treatment in the United States, and it’s one of the best ways to remove hair if you don’t want to opt for laser hair removal instead.
There are plenty of reasons why women and men would both prefer to instead do their waxing at home rather than have it professionally done in a salon environment.
The first reason why most people prefer waxing at home is the fact that it’s uncomfortable to have most areas that you’d want waxed touched by a stranger – yes, even if they are a professional who does this every day for a living, it’s still pretty weird being on the other end.
I’ve had plenty of bikini waxes in a salon, and even though they might know what they’re doing, it’s always pretty awkward. For many people if you’re like me, it seems like a more painful process when it’s someone else doing it.
The second reason is convenience: Waxing at home can be easier, faster and a lot more comfortable than having it done in a salon, and you can focus on the parts of your body that you know need it the most.
There are a lot of options out there when you have to buy a home waxing kit. It seems overwhelming, especially if you’ve never done it before – and one product is never as good as another. Some waxing kits can even cause severe side-effects, and it’s true that waxing kits are sometimes meant only for one type of hair at a time.
It’s important to choose the right home waxing kit for your needs. I’ve waxed plenty of times, and I’ve done it with the wrong wax, too – it’s painful, cumbersome and it sucks.
Here’s how to choose your home waxing kit, a review of the best selection of waxing options available on the market and more information about the how and why of waxing if you’ve never done it before.

Reviewing 10 of the Best Home Waxing Kits
Considering a home waxing kit?
All products aren’t created the same, and it’s true that some waxing products work better than others, especially for people who might have more sensitive skin.
Naturally, you’ll want to choose a product that’s been proven to work – especially considering how sensitive of a job waxing can be.
Here’s a comprehensive review of 10 of the best home waxing kits available on the market, and how they work when put to the test.
Nads Body Wax Strips are one of the best possible home wax kits on the market because they advertise themselves as being friendly for the skin – and most people who use them will find that they are.
This product comes in packages of 24, and they’re enough to last you for a while. They’re even great for removing shorter, newer hair growth – and this is something that a lot of home wax products get wrong.
This is one product that I’ve used several times, when travelling or when I need a quick solution.
2. Sally Hansen Hair Removal Kit
Sally Hansen has long been in the cosmetics business, and still remains one of the most trusted brands. Their Hair Removal kit is easy to use and quick, as well as good for the skin at the same time. It doesn’t disappoint even if you have more hair to get through than usual – and it won’t upset your skin at the same time.
I’ve preferred Sally Hansen when I can’t get hold of my usual options, and I’ve even recommended its use to many people, especially ones that haven’t used wax before.
3. GiGi Brazilian Body hard Wax
While it’s not your traditional wax strips like some of the other options in this article, GiGi Brazilian Body is a great way to keep your skin in great condition – and still get rid of all the hair, especially when we’re talking about some hard-to-reach places where traditional wax strips won’t do the job.
I’ve preferred GiGi Brazilian Body Wax for those times right before summer where I really want to make sure I look good in a bikini for the season – or right before a big date.
4. Veet Wax Strips with Easy Gelwax
Veet is a trusted and known brand that’s used by a lot of people for their skincare needs – and this is what makes a lot of people choose it as their option when it comes to waxing. This is their ready-strip option that means that you don’t have to worry about applicators and hot wax – you can use the strips. For quick convenience, it’s perfect for many.
I’ve used Veet before, and it’s just not the kind of thing that works for me, so I avoid it: But this doesn’t mean that all products won’t work for you, because everyone has different skin.
5. Parissa Natural Hair Removal Strips
Parissa is a trusted skincare brand that happens to make a wide variety of different products that especially people with more sensitive skin tend to prefer. Parissa Natural Hair Removal Strips are some of the best products to choose if you have skin that doesn’t take well to any other products.
Parissa Natural Hair Removal Strips works great for places that tend to be harder to reach; they did for me, however, cause a bit of a contact rash – more than my usual product choices do – so I switched back.
6. Surgi-Wax Brazilian Private Waxing
When it comes to personal hair wax, the majority of types out there are designed to work only on certain areas such as the legs or the face – and when you want to wax more intimate areas than this, you often don’t want to use the same wax because it’s really, really going to hurt and might even end up giving you a horrible contact rash where the wax touched your skin.
Surgi-Wax has a special product designed for intimate hair waxing; it can work great for anything else, but it’s best for personal areas.
I found it to be pretty great for removing hair on sensitive areas – and for times where I just need these areas waxed, I’ll probably still use Surgi-Wax.
7. GiGi Student Starter Hair Removal Kit
GiGi happens to make a wide variety of different products for personal hygiene and waxing, and this is their product that’s aimed at anyone who might never have waxed before in their life and would like something that’s pretty easy to use.
It’s also great for people who have tried many different types of wax and haven’t found anything that worked.
The starter hair removal kit literally contains everything you need, including the drier, which makes it an especially excellent product.
I’ve used both products from GiGi – and I’d use both again any day. I’ve also recommended this option to people who have never waxed before and find themselves a little terrified of the whole process.
8. Bliss Poetic Waxing Hair Removal Kit
Bliss Poetic Hair Removal Strips is only one of a few great skincare products offered by the Bliss range, and their hair wax is a great product if you’re looking for something that’s not going to hurt all that much, not going to be too hard to apply and not going to hurt your skin in the process.
These hair strips come with everything you need, and it’s easier than you might think to use it – great for if you’ve never waxed before in your life.
If someone has never waxed before in their lives and find the whole process confusing, then I’ll usually recommend Bliss Poetic Strips rather than a wax product that you have to melt and apply. This one, like Veet, is quick and easy – and less likely to cause skin issues. This one is effective if you can look past the fact that it’s blue.
9. Extra-Strength Removal Waxing Kit
The Extra-Strength Removal Hair Waxing Kit isn’t for everyone, but it’s the kind of product that you should be buying if you have coarser hair – or have used other products before and they didn’t manage to remove all of your body hair in the way that you needed it to.
It can be great for sensitive skin, and it’s an all-natural product that comes with the necessary applicators so that you don’t have to go and buy anything extra after.
Honestly, I’ve only ever used this product once to test it – and it wasn’t bad: I just don’t need anything that says “extra strength” when my regular wax product already does the job fine.
10. Wowax Brazillian Hard Wax
Wowax Brazilian Hard Wax is a different type of wax to most of the home hair wax kits that you’ll find on the market. Instead of coming with the usual wax strips or applicators that you’d see with other kits, this one instead works as a hard wax that dries shortly after application – and is removed as-is without the help of any other tools.
It’s a little more complicated than simply applying anything else, but this doesn’t make the product less effective – and it comes with a promise of all-natural goodness that won’t mess with your skin.
Personally, I found Wowax to be a little too weird for my regular use – and I could only ever get myself to use it once, during which it had left a massive mess and dripped everywhere that it shouldn’t have. It might work for you, it just really didn’t work for me.

Everything You Should Know About Waxing
Waxing can be a pretty complicated process, especially if you’ve never done it before. It can even seem much harder than it really is if you’re afraid of doing something wrong.
It shouldn’t have to be this hard to find the right product to wax with, and there are a few easy things that you can look at when it comes to the home wax product that you choose that can make the entire process of picking one easier.
We know that waxing isn’t easy. This is more true if you’ve never waxed anything before or if you’ve only done it once or twice without following the instructions the right way.
Here’s more about just how to wax, and how to make it an easy and painless from the first step where you choose the product through to where you actually complete the waxing process.
There’s no reason why waxing should look like the nightmare scene from The 40 Year Old Virgin. There’s actually an easier and much less painful way to do it.
Waxing: Reading the Instructions
The first thing that you should do once you’ve bought a new waxing product is to read the instructions. If you’ve used one product before, then you would think that the instructions would be the exact same thing for another product, but nothing could be further from the truth, and this is one of the most common mistakes when it comes to waxing at home.
Always read the instructions for each individual product, even when you think that you know it already. Sometimes even the individual product can have changes in instructions from one month to the next. Always, always check.
Understanding the Ingredients
The second thing that is pretty much as important as the instructions for using the product are the ingredients that you can find in the product. Always check the ingredients list and consider it to be as vital if not one of the most important things to know about the product you buy.
If you have a known sensitivity to any of the ingredients that are listed on the product label, you should avoid it and choose another product that won’t have the same negative effect.
It’s true that a lot of people have no idea what these ingredients are that they might be sensitive – although luckily the patch test happens to be a thing, and you should do this first by default if you aren’t sure which ingredients in a product are what’s causing the effect.
Doing the Patch Test
Remember that if you experience any allergylike symptoms from using the product, there’s only one possible course of action for you – and that’s to stop using the particular product and switch to something else. Depending on the severity of the allergic reaction that you’re experiencing, you might have to take an anti-allergy medication to assist with the reaction that you might be having.
If you’re used to sensitive skin and having reactions to some types of skincare products, you should always exercise a certain amount of caution when using a new skincare product when you aren’t sure how your skin will react.
The patch test is the quickest and easiest way to figure out whether a product will work for you skin, and it’s exactly what it sounds like. A small “patch” of the product is applied to a tiny part of the skin, and this can be much easier when you want to see if a product reacts to your skin – and it’s safer than realizing this once you’ve applied the product to your skin.
If you have regular issues with your skin, consult an expert instead.
Wax Strips Versus Wax
Wax strips can be one of the best ways to remove excess hair – but it doesn’t work for everyone. Instead of buying the ready-created wax strips, some people instead buy the wax and the strips separately. If you’re interested in buying wax separately, then GiGi is going to be the best choice for you; the product also happens to be all-natural, like most of the products featured on the list.
How to Choose the Right Wax
If you’ve never waxed before, it’s likely that you won’t know this – and that’s why we’re making sure you do know this to make your home wax experience a lot easier. There are different types of wax that can be used for home wax, usually either hot or cold, and either hard or soft.
Each of these different types of wax have their advantages and disadvantages, and you might have to try several different options to find the right one for you.
How to Wax
If you’ve never waxed anything before, then you should check the instructions to find out just how to use the product – and from there on, there are a few general steps that tend to be the same across the board no matter what product you’re using.
First, it’s always a good idea to clean and dry the general area before you wax: It’s safer, cleaner and easier this way, and it’s the way the professionals would do it for you in a salon. Second, it’s always a good idea to conduct the basic patch test before using the entire product on your skin – and it can save you a whole lot of time and effort.
Things to Look For
There are several important things that you should look for when choosing a home wax product. These things also happen count when you’re choosing any general skincare products, too. Here’s what you should be looking out for when making any changes to your skincare routine, even if we aren’t talking about buying wax.
Do I really need an “all-natural” product?
There’s a lot of questions out there about whether or not all-natural products are really best for your skin – and in most cases, the answer is yes. Chemicals can do many things to your skin, from allergic reactions through to more long-term effects, and when you’re faced with one of several different options, it’s best to always choose the most natural one.
When to wax?
How regularly one should wax is one of the most common questions when it comes to waxing – and there isn’t really a right answer when it comes to this one. Usually, it’s a few weeks – one to two – but it’s a different answer for every person, and when you should wax can depend on everything from the amount of sunlight you are getting every day through to your diet.
Wax when the hair starts to grow back. That’s the most simple answer, and it’s different for everyone.

FAQ
Any questions?
Of course!
Waxing can be both pretty scary and confusing if you’ve never done it before, and it’s likely that there are still a few things that you might want to know before you approach doing it yourself with a home wax kit. Here are some of the most common Frequently Asked Questions about home wax kits, answered.
What if I have an allergic reaction?
While allergic reactions aren’t really considered to be too common with the use of home wax products, sensitivity to the products can happen – and in some rarer cases, so can allergic reactions. If this happens to you, then you should stop using the product that you think caused the allergic reaction immediately, and if you have a severe allergic reaction, use medication to control symptoms.
What kind of wax should I be using?
If you’ve never waxed before, waxing can seem overly complicated .There are different types of wax that you can use, including hot or cold. The first (and pretty much only) thing you should know about the difference between the two is the fact that hot wax will attach to harder-to-remove hairs, and should always be done when the wax isn’t too hot.
Is waxing painful?
No matter how gentle you might be doing it, waxing is still the process of forcefully removing hair from the follicles. It’s going to hurt at least a little. How much it hurts depends on your technique, your skin, your hair and your tolerance to pain – but in most cases, it’s over before you know it and not nearly as bad as you might think.
Can I wax while taking medication?
It’s pretty obvious that you should avoid waxing at all if you have certain medical conditions that make you more prone to bleeding, or if you have a condition such as eczema which affects the skin. But most people have no clue that medication can also affect whether or not you’re able to wax – and many skin medications such as Accutane can also mean that you shouldn’t consider waxing at least until you are no longer taking the specific medication.
Other things like chemotherapy can also disqualify you from being able to wax.
How does hair grow back after waxing?
It’s a very common myth that hair will grow back thicker once you’ve shaved or waxed – but if you’re going to do it, the first thing that you should know is the fact that this is a complete myth when it comes to hair: Hair does not ever grow back thicker after you shave or wax – and in fact, waxing hair makes it take longer to grow back instead of the opposite.

Conclusion
Of all the products we’ve tested for this article, two of them stand out to us – and there’s good reason why we chose two products to stand out. Which one of the two products you’re going to choose will depend on just what your needs are.
While most people might not have chosen it off the shelf as their first option, Sally Hansen’s Wax Removal Strips turned out to be one of the best products to use – even if you have more sensitive skin, and even if you have thicker hair to remove.
If you have more special needs (or if you aren’t completely comfortable with the option of ready-made wax strips), you can choose GiGi Body Wax instead and make use of your own applicator – it’s the most natural way if you’ve tried others and they didn’t work for you.
If neither of these fit your needs or your price range, you can consider Veet as a third option, but be warned that many people have shown a sensitivity to Veet products by default and they’re better off making use of something else.
